What do trustees actually do?
Trustees are jointly responsible for the nursery’s governance. That covers things like finances, staffing oversight, and making sure we meet our Ofsted and Charity Commission obligations. The day-to-day running of the nursery stays with our staff — your role is to support and oversee, not to manage.
Full induction and training is provided. We are also members of the Early Years Alliance, which gives trustees access to free legal and HR support.
Who are we looking for?
Any parent, carer, or community member who cares about this nursery and can spare the time. All backgrounds welcome. Experience in any of the following is useful, but none of it is required:
- Finance or accounting
- HR or employment
- Fundraising or charity management
- Strategy or leadership
- Early years or education
Trustees must be over 16. An enhanced DBS check is required as part of the process — having a previous conviction does not automatically prevent you from volunteering.

If your child comes to East Harptree Nursery, you already have a stake in this place. Becoming a trustee is a chance to help shape its future — and to know that it exists, in part, because you showed up.
It’s also an opportunity to develop real skills in governance, charity management, and leadership that are genuinely valuable beyond this role.
